The internet has always been a passion of mine. I created my first website at age 12, dedicated to a certain bean bag animal that was all the rage at the time. Even in those early days, I saw the potential for connecting with others who shared similar interests and for making an income. I earned enough through those early ventures to help buy my first horse!
AI has the power to do incredible things, not just on the internet, but in every aspect of our lives. However, without standards in place for responsible use, AI also has the power to destroy everything that is great about the internet.
Already the online landscape is littered with computer generated recipes, crafts, photos, etc. With the sheer volume of this fake content flooding social media and search engines, real creators are being pushed out of view. This is devastating for those small businesses, but it is also devastating for anyone who uses the internet.
Who wants an internet full of fake content? Fake people? False information? What made the internet so special to begin with was the fact that everyday people had the chance to be seen and heard; that you could find the answer to any question in seconds. Now it is on a path to become a wasteland of useless content.
It is not too late to save the internet. That is not a dramatization – we do have to SAVE the internet before we lose this incredible resource. The easiest way to do that is to support REAL creators and stop using AI to circumvent hiring real people.
The actors’ and writers’ guilds have already stood up for their craft and created industry guidelines to prevent unethical use of AI. We need to do the same for online creators.
