My Modern Met
My name is Eugene Kim and I run the art+culture blog My Modern Met.
Founded in 2008, My Modern Met reaches millions of people around the world and features articles on topics ranging from art, design, photography, science, history, the environment, and more. Our mission is to promote a positive culture by spotlighting the best sides of humanity—from the lighthearted and fun to the thought-provoking and enlightening.
While we enjoy exposing people to visually stunning images alongside captivating stories, we also provide a platform for incredibly talented artists who are on the pulse of contemporary art.
Our aim is to contribute to a brighter future by showcasing the top creative minds in the world. We celebrate diversity and inclusivity because we believe that the most beautiful fabric is one that includes us all.
Some of our favorite emails to receive are from teachers all over the globe. They tell us that they use our content to educate their students, ranging from grade school to university level. We also receive emails from students who inform us that they source our content for school projects.
We are proud to work closely with artists, who often reach out to let us know that they appreciate the spotlight we put on their work. They receive messages from viewers who discovered them on our site. Sometimes the attention encourages them to expand their work even further. One artist, whose video we featured, received over five million views. It gave her the motivation that she needed to re-release a second version of her exquisite photo book.
Like any rapidly advancing technology, we must embrace the very best parts of AI. It has the potential to help save lives through medical breakthroughs or solve the world’s biggest challenges like climate change. However, we need to be cognizant of the risks it poses as well.
In digital media, the internet is currently at risk of being deeply cluttered by low quality, mass-produced AI content. It would be in society’s best interest if search and social media platforms like Google, Facebook, and Pinterest prioritized original content from actual humans. Creativity and authenticity should be the cornerstone of the internet.
Much of the content that AI generates is originally sourced from independent publishers, whom big tech companies are now squeezing out. What will happen when all these independent publishers leave because they cannot afford to keep going? There will be less original content on the web. In addition, AI sometimes produces fake news, so that should be scrutinized heavily as well.
Content from independent publishers should be prioritized because they bring so much value to the internet. By crowding them out with AI content, the internet is at risk of losing many independent creators. Is the world a better place with fewer voices? I would argue that the beauty of the internet is inclusivity – that everyone around the world has a voice and can participate, creating a diverse, multifaceted forum where everyone’s ideas are represented, not just an echo chamber controlled by a few big tech companies powered by AI.
